Using the “Black Magic” Inking Technique with Embossing Folders

Get ready for a little cardmaking magic—because this technique is seriously wow-worthy! ✨ Hello Crafty friends! Priscilla here from Nubble Light Designs. For today’s project, I took the Floral Fence of Togetherness 3D Embossing Folder from Spellbinders and flipped the script—literally! After embossing, I turned the image over and worked on the debossed side, blending vibrant pigment inks into the recessed florals and fence area. Then came the magic: the “Black Magic” technique! By swiping black pigment ink across the surface, the color stayed on the raised areas while the beautifully inked details underneath popped through for a bold, dramatic finish. Topped with Spellbinder’s new layered Happy Birthday sentiment die, this card is all about contrast, texture, and a little bit of crafty illusion. 🖤🌸✨

Note: Check our Cathy Zielske’s recent Youtube video, Fast Cards: Have You Tried this Technique?”,  which was the inspiration for my card today.

🧰 Spellbinders Products Used

📋 Card Details:

  • Created a white A7 Side Fold Card Base and swiped orange pigment ink down the right edge of the card base.
  • Cut a white cardstock layer to 5×7, lightly sprayed it with water, and ran it through my Big Shot using Spellbinders’s Floral Fence of Togetherness 3D Embossing Folder.
  • Trimmed 1/4″ off the right side of the embossed layer.
  • Flipped the embossed cardstock over to work on the recessed (debossed) side.

  • Sponged orange and green pigment inks into the recessed floral images and then silver metallic ink into the fence lines.

  • After finishing the inking of the recessed floral images and fence, I swiped black pigment ink over the entire card front. The recessed inked areas remained mostly unaffected.

  • Adhered the finished layer to the card base.
  • Die cut the “Happy Birthday” sentiment using the Layered Happy Birthday Etched Dies and gold cardstock.
  • Die cut the shadow using vellum cardstock.
  • Adhered the two together and added it to the front of the card.

  • Added three gold pearls for the finishing touch!
